The national PE, School Sport and Club Links strategy was launched by the Prime Minister in October 2002 and went live in April 2003. The Government has invested £978m between 2003-04 and 2007-08 to deliver the strategy. In addition, £686m lottery funding is enhancing school sports facilities. That means that in total over £1.5 billion is being invested into physical education and school sport in the five years up to 2008.

In July 2007, Gordon Brown announced a further £100 million investment to support achievement of the 2010 ambition of every child having the chance of five hours of physical eduction and sport per week. This increased investment has seen an increased focus on the development of competitive opportunities through both intra and inter school competition.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport have come together to jointly lead the strategy. Its overall objective - a public service agreement target shared by the two Departments - is to enhance the take-up of sporting opportunities by 5-16 year-olds.

The ambitious target is to increase the percentage of schoolchildren who spend a minimum of two hours a week on high-quality PE and school sport within and beyond the curriculum to 85% by 2008.

The long-term ambition, by 2010, is to offer all children five hours of sport every week made up of:

  •  at least two hours of high quality PE and sport at schools - with the expectation that this will be delivered totally within the curriculum; and
  • an additional 2-3 hours beyond the school day delivered by a range of school, community and club providers.

PESSCL has since had its name changed to PESSYP – Physical Education and Sport Strategy for Young People.

As an example, one of its newer initiatives is the development of a Professional Development Programme with a Key Stage 4 project. It is seeking information on good practice at KS4 related to;

·          Promoting participation at KS4

·          Increasing girls participation

·          Increasing time allotted for PE at KS4

·          Improving learning in PE

·          Innovative approaches to teaching and learning

·          Identifying talent and supporting those who are gifted and talented

The Five Hour Offer

The Five Hour Sport Offer is part of Sport England, Youth Sport Trust and National Governing Body strategy, designed to offer school children five hours worth of sport with professional coaching outside of school hours.

The new “sporting landscape for young people” means that young people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds now have the opportunity to enjoy sport in a high quality teaching environment away from school as well as at school.

Whether they are gifted and talented and want to further themselves in their chosen sport(s), or just want to enjoy participating with friends, enhanced school-club links in the Bassetlaw area mean this is more obtainable than ever before.
