DANCE MARCH-APRIL 2009

By Tracey Everett-Fox, Dance Teacher & Coach

Once again this has been a very busy term. I have been teaching in new schools and also revisiting schools.

As I said in my last article I was preparing some of the schools for the Dance Festival held at Tuxford School on Friday 20th March.

This was a fantastic event and I thoroughly enjoyed watching all the various dances.

Well Done to Norwell, Elkesley and North Clifton who completed there routines this term which we started last term and they performed very well at the Festival.

Another Well Done goes to Dunham-on-Trent School who also performed a routine. I worked with the school in December of last year and I have not been out to revisit them. So they did extremely well remembering and practising their routine!

Queen Eleanor School YR3 & YR4 pupils

I had agreed with Wendy Wakefield that I would work with two year groups and arrange two different routines to enable them to take 2 groups to the Dance Festival at Tuxford. We had 4 weeks so each group had ¾ hour session each week.

Yr3 worked on StreetDance to ‘Let Me Think About It’. I used a small amount of StreetDance steps with this group and arranged them into a small routine which they repeated throughout the length of the song.

Yr4 worked on a more choreographed routine to ‘Getcha Head in the Game’ from High School Musical. This included StreetDance, Freestyle and Modern Dance steps.

Both groups did very well remembering the steps and had lots of attitude and style to perform the routines well.

Everton School

I have recently started working with this school on a long term project, where I will teach various year groups and various different dance styles including some aspects of Musical Theatre. This arrangement is to carry on until early next year so I am looking forward to this as I will get to know the pupils on a long term basis and I can work more closely with them.

Finally

I have now even started thinking about what’s’ next and even thinking about plans for the next school year starting September 2009 so if anyone reading this has any ideas or needs help, please get in touch!

WELL DONE EVERYBODY!!!

FREESTYLE/ STREET DANCE

OCTOBER – DECEMBER 2008

By Tracey Everett-Fox, Dance Teacher & Coach

Walkeringham School YR1 & YR2 pupils

Before I started the sessions at Walkeringham I dropped a CD off to them with a selection of up-to-date songs. The pupils listened to them and they chose ‘Let Me Think About It’ by ~Ida Corr vs Fedde Le Grand!

I started off by introducing the pupils to Street Dance and Freestyle. We worked on some basic steps and they begin to feel the style and attitude of the music very well, displaying good rhythm and enjoyment and enthusiasm. I then showed them various steps and gestures which they remembered very well from week to week. As they got more used to the steps I began to put a few together to show them how a routine works. I split them into two groups and they ‘performed’ to each other. By the end of the 6 weeks they had managed to remember, with a little bit of intervention from me, a routine to the whole length of the song. This for their age group, was a fantastic achievement. Well Done Walkeringham!!

The children then included this routine into their Christmas Play to show parents and friends how well they had done!

Dunham-on-Trent School

I initially set up my visits to Dunham-on Trent School with Dorothy Hayes, Headteacher  who was very keen for me to visit the school  and to give their pupils the opportunity to experience Dance. We decided that I would do some sessions with years 5&6 children.

I worked with a group of approx 30 children, a mixture of boys and girls. To start with the boys were a bit pessimistic about dancing but after the first week I could see that all the children were thoroughly enjoying it. The children were very well behaved and always put 100% into each session.

Again I let them choose the music and they chose ‘Pump it’ by Black Eyed Peas.

We worked on various steps and gestures each week and began working on a routine. The children then decided that they would like to costume the routine and perform this. So on my last week the school arranged for the performance to be done in their hall. The pupils dressed up and a lot of parents came to watch them perform. Both children and parents enjoyed it that much that they all cheered and the routine had to be performed again for a second viewing!!

Well done Dunham-on-Trent.

St Peters CofE School, Gringley

My sessions at the school in Gringley were with 19 KS1 children.

I started off by introducing the pupils to Street Dance and letting them listen to different types of music. They all liked ‘Now Your Gone’ by Basshunter which is a favourite round all the schools especially the younger children. I showed them various steps and gestures which they remembered very well from week to week. As they got more used to the steps I began to put a few together to show them how a routine works. I split them into two groups and they ‘performed’ to each other, giving each other good feedback after each session. They were all very enthusiastic and we had a lot of fun together. By the end of the 6 weeks they had managed to remember a routine to the whole length of the song.

Well Done Gringley.

Finally

I have been overwhelmed again by the welcome I have received in all schools and it makes me very proud as a Dance Teacher to know that these children have been given the opportunity to see how Dance can give them a lot of satisfaction and to be proud of themselves.

WELL DONE EVERYBODY !!!

Overview of the National Competition Framework

The dual ambition of the National Competition Framework is to provide a competitive environment for all young people and to help sport through attracting, supporting, retaining and passing on talent. The vision is to establish a high quality competitive school sport structure by developing school based competition pathways. This can be achieved through Inter- School (local), Inter-Partnership (District) and county, regional and national levels. The framework looks to develop: annual multi-skill festivals for Key Stage 1; termly multi-skill festivals for lower Key Stage 2; multi-sport competitions and central venue leagues for upper Key Stage 2 and lower Key Stage 3; and, inter-school leagues and cup competitions for Key Stage 3 & 4.

What’s Happened during the School Year so far?

During the first half term of the year, schools have engaged in a number of inter-school competitions and festivals for pupils in every year group. The competitions so far, have included, cross country, football, netball, rugby league, rugby union and tennis, providing competitive opportunity for over 750 pupils.

Happy Students and Teachers – Just What We Want!

From September of this academic year Jamie Bird has been working with many primary schools throughout the Bassetlaw School Sports Partnership and will continue to do so during the summer term. He is a fully qualified specialist teacher of PE and the aim of his work is to increase the number of students doing a minimum of two hours of high quality PE each week. His focus has been OSHL and Curriculum Development. Jamie has assisted the teachers with their PE subject knowledge and shared ideas with them. He has been delivering sessions on a range of sports and activities E.G. Football, Tag Rugby, Invasion Games, Basketball, Multi Skills, Athletics, Gymnastics and Cricket. Each session is always inclusive allowing every child to get the most out of the experience. Students are able to take a full and active part enabling them to make progress regardless of their abilities. The sessions have been a real success but in particular the multi skills, football and invasion games sessions have had the most impact. Large numbers of students have since shown a real desire to participate in multi skills festivals and teachers have said how they now feel that they have the ideas and confidence to deliver similar PE lessons.
