DANCE MARCH-APRIL 2009

By Tracey Everett-Fox, Dance Teacher & Coach

Once again this has been a very busy term. I have been teaching in new schools and also revisiting schools.

As I said in my last article I was preparing some of the schools for the Dance Festival held at Tuxford School on Friday 20th March.

This was a fantastic event and I thoroughly enjoyed watching all the various dances.

Well Done to Norwell, Elkesley and North Clifton who completed there routines this term which we started last term and they performed very well at the Festival.

Another Well Done goes to Dunham-on-Trent School who also performed a routine. I worked with the school in December of last year and I have not been out to revisit them. So they did extremely well remembering and practising their routine!

Queen Eleanor School YR3 & YR4 pupils

I had agreed with Wendy Wakefield that I would work with two year groups and arrange two different routines to enable them to take 2 groups to the Dance Festival at Tuxford. We had 4 weeks so each group had ¾ hour session each week.

Yr3 worked on StreetDance to ‘Let Me Think About It’. I used a small amount of StreetDance steps with this group and arranged them into a small routine which they repeated throughout the length of the song.

Yr4 worked on a more choreographed routine to ‘Getcha Head in the Game’ from High School Musical. This included StreetDance, Freestyle and Modern Dance steps.

Both groups did very well remembering the steps and had lots of attitude and style to perform the routines well.

Everton School

I have recently started working with this school on a long term project, where I will teach various year groups and various different dance styles including some aspects of Musical Theatre. This arrangement is to carry on until early next year so I am looking forward to this as I will get to know the pupils on a long term basis and I can work more closely with them.

Finally

I have now even started thinking about what’s’ next and even thinking about plans for the next school year starting September 2009 so if anyone reading this has any ideas or needs help, please get in touch!

WELL DONE EVERYBODY!!!

YEAR 11 BOYS FOOTBALL

The boys deservedly won away at Gedling School in an action packed County cup fixture.  Liam Conway drifted across the field from the right hand side and while off balance hit a left foot shot that caught the goal keeper off guard to put us 1-0 up.  It was a close match but defender Thomas Doxey was solid throughout, clearing any danger and Kieran Watson’s work rate in centre midfield was inspiring others.  But the most prolific incidents that will go down in Portland history was the two, yes two penalty saves and a brave block from close range in the dying seconds from goal keeper Ryan Heath.  Mr Best could not believe his eyes, ‘it was truly amazing!’  Liam Gabbitas thought he had doubled the lead right at the end when he rifled a shot that was heading for the top corner but he was unfortunately denied by their goal keeper.  Despite some strange decisions and added time from somewhere, the boys managed to hang on to their well fought slender lead.

The next fixture was at home against Toothill School and more players were added to strengthen the squad.  They started slowly and conceded early doors but as the game progressed they seemed to grow in confidence and managed to equalise with a great long range effort from James Mainwaring.  Changes were made at half time but unfortunately the boys narrowly missed out this time as they conceded another and lost 2-1!

YEAR 8 BOYS RUGBY

Mr Best is extremely pleased with the progress the boys have made during lunchtimes and in competitions this year.  In a tournament at East Retford Rugby Club they only lost one game and that was against a strong Medan team.  More recently at Newark Rugby Club their tackling ability had improved and they showed great teamwork, both with and without the ball.  They nearly qualified for the County competition but unfortunately missed out in the final game by one try to Tuxford School.

Well done Liam Arnold, Sam Baird, Aaron Dobson, Matthew Edwards, Jake Ellender, Robert Gray, Luke Halliwell, Jack Harrop, Jack Healey, Ryan Jessop, Oliver McKay, Chris Mellor, Jed Pedley, Mitchell Phillips, Jake Snowden, Alex Stringfellow, and Jordan Wales.

GIRLS FOOTBALL

Congratulations to the year 7 team who convincingly beat Gedling School 7-2 to book their place in the quarter final of the County cup.  It was a great team performance and the goals came from Abbie Bartrop, Chloe Hale , Bethan Lee (4) and the other was an own goal.  Well done also to Joanne Bulmer, Gemma Payne and Amie Roberts for some excellent defensive play throughout.

Since then the girls have had even more success in a friendly match against Tuxford School and by winning the West Notts tournament.  Mr Best took two teams to both these events allowing some girls that have not played in the team before an opportunity to develop their skills in a competitive game.  Well done Joanne Bulmer, Shelby Carter, Megan Dale, Jaycee Dickson, Olivia Fagan, Helen Herrick, Mhari Macdonald, Gemma Payne, Amie Roberts, Hannah Sinnott, Shauni Whiteley and goal scorers Abbie Bartrop, Sophia Introna, Bethan Lee (2) and Leigh Anne Tomlinson.

More recently the girls have beat West Bridgford 2-0 in the quarter final of the County cup and will (finally!) now play a home match against Arnold Hill School in the semi final on Tuesday 31st March.  Both goals were scored by Bethan Lee but it was the clean sheet that was really pleasing thanks to Shelby Carter, Jaycee Dixon, Mhari Macdonald and Aime Roberts.

The year 8 girls should have played in their West Notts tournament but it was cancelled due to the bad weather and no date has yet been rearranged.

In the year 9 & 10 West Notts tournament at Tuxford School, the year 9 team came 4th and the year 10 team won overall.  Well done Nathalie Bartrop, Shannon Brookes, Staci Canham, Abbie Carrington, Olivia Dashper, Laura Gabbitas, Yasmine Hammond, Lucy Jones, Lauren Kirkwood Kirby, Brook Moore, Victoria Moore, Lucy Parkin, Paige Perkins, Amy Reynolds, Chloe Roche, Ashleigh Sykes and Leanna Turner.

A mixed team of the two year groups was also triumphant in their next tournament at Dukeries School, only conceded one goal throughout.  Well done Nathalie Bartrop, Staci Canham, Abbie Carrington, Lauren Kirkwood Kirby, Victoria Moore, Lucy Parkin, Paige Perkins, Chloe Roche and goal scorers Shannon Brooks and Brook Moore.

Lastly but by no means least, well done to the year 11 team who claimed runners up spot after narrowly missing out in the last game at Retford Oaks School.  Congratulations Natalie Hunt, Natalie Kirkwood, Charlotte McKeeman, Drew Philips, Claire Stephen, Molly Taylor, Kerrianne Thorlby-Coy and Kate Voice.

BADMINTON

Mr Best was really pleased that both the year 9 and year 11 mixed badminton teams finished 3rd overall in a tournament at Serlby Park School because the standard of the opposition was of a really high standard.  Well done Shannon Brookes, Olivia Dashper, Liam Gabbitas, Aime Giles, Ryan Heath, Charles Holliday, Andrew Lee, Chris Parkes, Josh Stansbury, Claire Stephen, Molly Taylor, Leanna Turner, Lauren Kirkwood Kirby, Kate Voice, Daniel Wood and Luke Wood.

KEY STAGE 3 BOCCIA

The boccia team won all their group games and for the first time in Portland history made it through to the final.  Mr Best would like to thank Mrs Underwood and Mrs Scott for working with the team to practice their skills on Wednesday lunchtimes.

Congratulations to all that have played but in particular Jamie Croft, Brendan Gladwin, Ryan Iberson, Adam Marshall and Jordan Neal for being selected for the final at Elizabethan School.  Unfortunately they lost to Tuxford School in a close fought final but they have all enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to a rematch at the youth games tournament on Thursday 30st April.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Well done to both the year 7 and year 9 teams for managing to qualify for the district finals after beating both Valley School and Serlby Park School in the preliminary rounds.  The year 9 team (Josh Bachner, Matthew Dobson, Thomas Elliott, Dean Gribbin, Wayne Hewlett, James Lewis, Carl McManus, Alex Needham, Chris Parkes and Bradd Rider) finished runners up after narrowly losing to a strong Elizabethan side but the year 7 team were crowned Bassetlaw champions without losing a single game.  Congratualtions Jordan Camm, Matthew Davies, James Hazelhurst, Harry Pritchard, Thomas Rix, Lloyd Rose, Charlie Shelton, Harry Taylor and Chris Whitlam.  Mr Best would also like to thank Steve Bell and Matt Snowden from Retford Raiders basketball club for refereeing the matches.
