Happy Students and Teachers – Just What We Want!

From September of this academic year Jamie Bird has been working with many primary schools throughout the Bassetlaw School Sports Partnership and will continue to do so during the summer term. He is a fully qualified specialist teacher of PE and the aim of his work is to increase the number of students doing a minimum of two hours of high quality PE each week. His focus has been OSHL and Curriculum Development. Jamie has assisted the teachers with their PE subject knowledge and shared ideas with them. He has been delivering sessions on a range of sports and activities E.G. Football, Tag Rugby, Invasion Games, Basketball, Multi Skills, Athletics, Gymnastics and Cricket. Each session is always inclusive allowing every child to get the most out of the experience. Students are able to take a full and active part enabling them to make progress regardless of their abilities. The sessions have been a real success but in particular the multi skills, football and invasion games sessions have had the most impact. Large numbers of students have since shown a real desire to participate in multi skills festivals and teachers have said how they now feel that they have the ideas and confidence to deliver similar PE lessons. It’s fantastic to see to many students and teachers enjoying their PE and sport!

Yr 3 / 4 Cricket & Multi skills Festival

Friday 22nd February & Friday 14th March

Over 100 Yr 3/ 4 students from the Valley Family took part in the Cricket & Multi skills festivals held at Valley and run by the Yr 10 sports leaders. Following training from the Community Cricket coaches at Trent Bridge, the sports leaders successfully ran the festival and set up activities which developed their cricket skills and agility, balance and coordination. The students involved really enjoyed the event and the sports leaders earned praise from the coaches in their ability to lead the various activities.

Yr 5 / 6 Rugby

Friday 29th February

Following a period of coaching from Steve Shaw in the primaries during the first half term, each school entered a team into the family festival where Steve commented that the standard of play was excellent. After lots of very close scoring games, Norbridge school won the event followed closely in second place by St.Johns. Well done to everyone who took part and many thanks to Steve Shaw for his excellent coaching within the primaries.

Primary Dance Festival

Monday 10th March

This was an opportunity for our family to showcase the dance work that is done within their schools during both curriculum and OSHL time. The performances included cheerleading from Redlands, gunboot dancing from Prospect Juniors and dance using hoops and balls from Norbridge. Students from the Yr 7 Dance clubs at Valley also performed and it was a really enjoyable afternoon showcasing a variety of dance styles.

Parents also came along to the event to support the schools.

Valley Dance Extravaganza

Wednesday 9th / Thursday 10th April

Over 100 dancers took part in this event which was the culmination of work by the Yr 10 / 11 and Yr 13 Dance Leaders. Since October the dance leaders have led weekly clubs for KS3 pupils after school in order to prepare them for the performance. They put together some superb choreography using a variety of dance styles which ensure the show was a complete success. Performances from the leaders themselves were amazing and the high standard ensured that the audience were not disappointed. There was a packed 300 audience both nights which meant that £1200 was raised for the local Bluebell Wood Hospice.

Valley Students run the Race for Life – Sunday 15th June

50 students and 20 staff from Valley have entered the Race for Life and are now in training to complete the event. The Race for Life club has now started and the girls are already keen to start building up their fitness and endurance for the event.

More Fun and Games at Serlby Park!

A hugely successful Multi Skills Festival was held at Serlby Park Secondary School on Thursday April 10th. It was an all day event with four primary schools from the Serlby Park family taking part. There were around 130 students who attended and had the opportunity to test their agility, balance and co-ordination skills. The students participated in both fun, non competitive activities and also in competitive tasks and games for those who love to win! Several students, teachers and helpers commented on how much they had enjoyed the day, so much so that the students didn’t want to stop for a drinks break! Thank you to all the teaching and support staff and the Young Leaders who all did a fantastic job of planning and delivering the activities. A great day was had by all!
