GIMME 5

Gone but not forgotten. Portland School hosted this year’s 5 a-side football and high 5 netball tournaments for the last time in the dusty, rickety but memorable old barns that are soon to be knocked down. No doubt many Portland and Hartland students will have fond memories of using the facilities alike the year 6 pupils who took part in these events recently.

The football tournament was one of the closest fought competitions to date with no team being undefeated throughout which meant the overall winner had to be decided on goal difference! Well done Haggonfields, Priory and St Luke’s but it was Langold Dyscarr School who were runners up by one goal to the reigning champions St Augustine’s School.

Many thanks to year 11 Junior Football Organisers James Keeling and Natalie Spiegal for their help with the event and volunteering to referee the matches.

In the high 5 netball competition it was Langold Dyscarr School again that narrowly missed out to Priory School who alike St Augustine’s won the competition for the second year running. All the girls did extremely well considering it was their first competitive match of the year.

Well done to the year 11/12 Sport Leaders Lauren Weil, Victoria Fletcher and Miriam West who worked with the teams on different skills before officiating in the tournament.

Serlby Park News, 15th October 2007

End of Term Report.

I can't believe that it's already the end of a thoroughly enjoyable year! Beginning in September at Valley and Portland Comprehensive schools, I was a bit nervous as ithad been six years since I had been working and had previously always taught primary age children. I was therefore unsure as to whether I would be able to teach dance to secondary age girls. However, I immediately found the classes both exciting and rewarding with many of the girls wanting to get involved with dance outside of their P.E. Lessons as well as being eager to performoutside of school.

My next schools were Retford Oaks and Serlby Park and these were equally as rewarding and alsoinvolved the move to a new school at Retford Oaks with a fantastic new dance studio with mirrors which enabled a higher standard of teaching and learning as the students were able to evaluate their performances as they worked.

For the last term I worked in Elizabethan High School, Retford and Tuxford School. The reception at Elizabethan was fantastic, especially with the extra curricular clubs where the high numbers forced us out of the smaller dance studio into the much larger gym. This also involved a small dance festival where the girls performed in front of visitors from various primary schools aswell as parents and teachers. They also had to stand in at the last minute to fill in time for Johnny Ball who was late for the science fair which was being held in the school. All the girls performed to a very high standard and were highly praised by all those who watched.

My body is now enjoying a well deserved rest after six hours of dancing each day but I am also eager to begin with a new set of students in September as well as hoping to work with some of  the girls I have worked with this year.

The Girls from Valley and Portland have worked particularly hard as they expressed a wish for me to set up a class outside of school and have since performed in two shows at The Acorn Theatre (CLICK ON http://www.bassetlawssp.org/photo-gallery.php )inWorksop and we are hoping there will be more to come. To say the majority of girls had little dance experience at the beginning of the year, they have worked hard to develop their own style of danceand have gained confidence to both perform and produce their own choreography as well as the taught routines.

I look forward to next year being as exciting and rewarding as this!

Rebecca Wingfield.
