February 2007 JUNIOR FOOTBALL ORGANISERS YEAR 11 STUDENTS 30 Year 11 students participated in The FA Junior football Organisers Award at Tuxford School ran by Mr Lee Garrett. This award prepares the students with the skills to lead coaching sessions and organise a festival. The students were taught health and safety, skill practices, organisational issues and coaching awareness. The students invited the Tuxford family of schools to the festivals; eight Schools took part in the festivals, which were hosted by Elkesley primary School and Sutton on Trent primary School. The leaders organised the whole day, in the morning they ran football coaching sessions each student working with 4 or 5 pupils, this was then followed in the afternoon by a mini football tournament, all the pupils were in mixed teams managed by one of the tuxford JFO students. The students also took it in turn to officiate the games. DANCE LEADERS AND DANCE FESTIVAL 25 year 10 students are currently participating in the dance leaders course, which explores the different dance styles and how the students can lead interesting and fun dance sessions for pupils. Some of these students have already been teamed up with older more experienced dance leaders to enable them to start using their new skills by assisting with after school clubs in primary schools. The primary schools will then come together for a festival of dance on Friday March 16th at Tuxford School. Tuxford News, 2nd February 2007 On Friday 26th January 64 Year 6 pupils from seven primaries gathered at Retford Sports Centre to commence a Young Leaders Award. This award will enable them to lead lunch time or playground activities with their peers or younger children. These young leaders spent a whole day training to give them a taster of planning and organising sporting activities. They developed their communication skills and confidence while delivering to a group of children. As tutors we thoroughly enjoyed our day and were impressed by the qualities and skills of the students. Each primary has been given £200 to help provide resources/eqipment for these young people to use during lunch time play. Elizabethan News, 2nd February 2007 I have now delivered my first Young Leader training to twelve pupils from Ordsall Junior School. I worked with six Year 5 and six Year 6 pupils. All pupils were extremely responsive, motivated and enthusiastic which made it a very enjoyable experience. The two hour session was a great success with all Leaders making significant progress. I will be following up this initial training with another two hour session very soon. I am delivering a similar session at St. Peter's Primary School this week and I am looking forward to taking further sessions and working with pupils from our other primary feeder schools in the coming weeks. I have enjoyed having the opportunity to put faces to names and look forward to meeting some of the other SSCOs at the next SSCO meeting later this week.
