This weeks featured coach is Mansfield-based Rugby coach Steve Shaw. Here is a peek into his world. “My name is Steve Shaw; I am employed by the Rugby Football Union as a Community Rugby Coach (CRC). I have been coaching rugby since 1992, coaching many junior teams and Nottinghamshire county teams. At the moment I am Head coach at Mansfield rugby club. As a CRC I have worked primarily in the North Nottinghamshire area. During that time I have supported a number of primary schools introducing the team game of ‘Tag rugby’, a none contact mini version of rugby. My role as CRC enables me to provide training, facilitate rugby sessions and support staff when introducing the game of ‘Tag Rugby’ to pupils at school. Following attendance to the ‘Tag Rugby’ course, staff gain a qualification as part of their continuous personal development. As a CRC my role enables me to support students within the Secondary schools. Working with Secondary school student’s permits the introduction of contact for the first time, this has proved very popular with both the male and female students. The popularity of Rugby within North Nottinghamshire area has seen an increase in the number of schools entering the ‘Emerging school festivals’ last year. My aim for this year is to ensure that the interest and desire to participate in the festival exceeds preceding years. Due to demand from schools requesting more fixtures, school partnership festivals are to be held, the areas to be covered by the festivals will include Bassetlaw, Newark and Sherwood and also Mansfield and Ashfield. The aim of the festivals will give young players the opportunity to play rugby in a competitive environment, increasing player’s confidence experience in preparation for the County cup games later in the season."
